It’s Simple: Good troublemakers instigate equity, imagination, and community benefit through the arts by building systems to expand access, opportunity, and shared well-being through program design and/or artistic interventions in shared spaces.

The Friction

Hunts Point does not have a consistent, hyper-local pipeline to high-quality dance training. Young people with potential must travel outside their community to access it, creating a barrier that limits who can participate and who continues.
Local recreational dance programs serve the community but are often stretched beyond their capacity to offer advanced training. At the same time, a newly built arts center has space designed for dance that remains underused due to a lack of programming and expertise.

The Method

Technique to Creation is a summer dance program for children ages 8–12, offered free to families in Hunts Point. Students train in classical ballet while developing their own choreography. Classes combine technical instruction with structured choreographic practice, allowing students to generate movement based on their ideas and experiences.

The program is built in partnership with local recreational dance programs, leveraging their existing work in the community to create a first step in a broader training pipeline. Professionals from across the dance field engage with the program, exposing students to professional pathways.

In parallel, a curriculum is developed through the teaching process, capturing the structure, exercises, and creative frameworks used in the program. This allows the model to be iterated, adapted, and implemented in other sites.
The program culminates in a public presentation of student-created work.

  • This partnership expands how we use the space and who it serves. Developing ballet programs in Hunts Point addresses a gap in arts investment for children in this community”

Infrastructure

  • Curriculum
A documented curriculum allows the program to be repeated and adapted in other sites and provides a clear training guide for new staff.
  • Use of space
The program activates an existing theater for regular dance training. A planned sprung floor will allow the space to function as a dedicated studio, increasing how often and how safely it can be used.
  • Partnership model
The program connects local recreational dance programs with the host organization, concentrating resources and participation into a single pipeline for progressive training in the community.

Impact

  • Pipeline
Students access high-quality dance training within their own community, keeping local talent local.
  • Partnership
Local recreational dance programs partner, allowing each to focus on its core offerings rather than stretching to provide high-level training outside its scope.
  • Expansion
The host organization expands from a presenting venue into a site for arts education.
